She'd been assured plenty by the staff who'd help her move her items from her private room that this was one of the larger rooms available in the co-ed dorm. But it still made her nervous. Her various items had been shoved into one smaller space. She'd have to make compromises to prevent this room from seeming too small.
Shiori sighed as she looked around at the various boxes. She'd a lot more possessions than someone having just moved here from her personal home in the human world. Shiori straighten out the computer monitor on her desk and pushed the chair back under it. It was the one thing the helpers had to set up before they left; she couldn't exactly kneel on the floor to hook up the modem and everything. They'd grumbled about it, but she simply glared at them threateningly and they'd shut up pretty quick. One thing about the bulky computers she liked is that they were much more reliable than laptops and less likely to get stolen.
Shiori limped back the boxes on her double-sized bed. She opened one box and pulled out some rolled up posters. She unrolled one and stared at it for a while, before rolling it back up and setting it the side. She did this with all the posters in this box, not hanging one up. She pulled out a rolled up canvas and put it to the side, putting the other posters back in the box. She never did hang up the posters in that particular box anyway. She glanced out the single window of the room and the bright light filtering in. First thing first, hang a sheet or something over that to darken the room.
Shiori searched through her boxes, trying to find her extra sheet. Annoyed that the movers hadn't taken into mind that half her stuff was for storage, she had a lot to go through. It wasn't that much of a surprise she was growling under her breath when she finally pulled out the thin black sheet. She grabbed a few tacks in her hand and carefully climbed upon her bed to reach the top of the window.
'Ugh, curse my midget-ness and this damn knee,' Shiori thought as her balance wavered. Her knee throbbed as she braced herself against the wall and stood on tip toe, trying to pin one corner of the sheet into the wall. The pain reminded her of the knee brace she'd have to tighten later, bulky and annoying. Her thought began to wander as she pinned the sheet in place. According to her adviser, she only had one roommate here as of now. " 'We're pulling a lot of strings!' Like this new arrangement my ass. Ouch!" Shiori snatched her hand back, sucking her pricked thumb. She lost her balance and her knee gave out, allowing her to fall safely on her mattress. She snatched her pillow and shoved her face in it, letting out a muffled screams.

The young faerie bit her lip as she headed towards her dorm, a back pack slung over her back, and wheeling one luggage carrier behind her, another latched atop that, and a third luggage carrier, and her travel on bag in her other hand. Her dark brown and blonde hair danced behind her, occasionally brushing against the iridescent purple wings sprouting from her back. She walked lightly, barely making a sound except for the slight wirr of the wheels on the wheeling luggage. She glanced at the doors as she passed, looking for the thirty nine that would be her room, heading towards and entering slowly, stopping at the door to see a woman already there, standing on her bed trying to tack up a sheet over the window, darkening the room, much to Caelum's dismay. Alarmed the faerie dropped the luggage in her hand as the girl suddenly collapsed back on the bed, grabbing a pillow and holding to her face. Caelum's wings where in a flutter, hovering her a few inches off the floor, and slowly she flew to the girl (Caelum was never the sort that enjoyed being on the ground). She touched the girl's shoulder, "Are, are you alright?" Instinct spurred her into motion, her finger tips touching just above the girl's obviously weak knee, using the little power she had (her talent being in healing), to ease some of the pain. She quickly with drew her hand after wards though, backing away (or rather fluttering away), "I . . . uh . . . I'm Caelum, I . . . I guess you must be my roommate?" The fae asked softly, already fluttering back to her luggage and moving it to another bed. Perching on the corner, she began to go through her four bags (including the carry on), unpacking her clothes, bedding, and other stuff. She smiled faintly, shyly, looking back to the girl before starting to hang up her clothes so she could clear off her bed and make it, silk sheets and high dollar bedding instantly being put into place a number of pillows on her bed, and a single image (of her beloved late-fiance) beneath them. Finally done unpacking she turned back to the girl, looking at her quietly, "So, umm, what are you? I mean . . . obviously, I'm a fae, considering my wings are kind of obvious. But . . . you?" She asked awkwardly, quietly.

Dear god, if she really had to share this small space with four people, she really would more than likely kill herself. She was used to her privacy and not only did she like it, she needed it half the damn time. The flutter of wings caused her blood to chill, her hands gripping the pillow tightly. Not again. Please, not another episode with the door wide open and her new roommate about to pop in. Was any of the faculty bright enough to maybe even very briefly inform the poor schmucks rooming with her of her mental issues. She’d hate to be the one to dump it on them. ‘Oh by the way, your roommate is a PSTD victim prone to throwing harmful objects at you. Good luck!’ ’I guess though, if I really was a hazard to any of my roommates I wouldn’t be here would I? I’d be back in my private room, locked away again like some animal.’ Shiori thought. She tensed when she felt a hand on her shoulder, her body frozen solid. She barely registered the words as the girl talked. She didn’t stay still for long though. The minute the fae touched her hurt knee, Shiori shot up, pale eyes wide and red hair disheveled. ”What are you do-“ her voice was cut off as suddenly, the ever present pain in her knee was gently coaxed away. Shiori stared wide eyed at her knee as the girl backed off. She heard the fluttering of wings again and finally looked up to get a good look at the girl.
Shiori’s eyes instantly trained to the translucent wings fluttering, holding the girl in the air. Fairy. ’Well…this isn’t too bad, I suppose.’ Shiori watched the fairy flutter about and get herself situated in not time. Instantly a dark feeling grew in her belly. Jealousy for her ease of movement, being able to even walk normally. The flight was just the cherry on top. Shiori turned back to her items, standing up and looking through her boxes. She had too much stuff for a single room shared with four people. They should have warned her. She was just separating her boxes into two piles when the girl spoke again. And finally Shiori answered. ”Yea, obviously...” she muttered, but felt a jab of guilt. This girl had helped her in more ways than she realized in the 5 minutes she was here. Normally Shiori always had a good bit of pain in her knee, but now it was barely noticeable. There was a dull ache, but nothing else.
Shiori sighed as she looked at the window. She thought back to her private lessons and remembered something about fairies in general. Most were bright and happy, it wouldn’t be right for her to shut the sun out. She reached up and tugged the sheet, wincing as the sun assaulted her pale eyes as it fell away. ”I’ll um...get someone to come by later and..um... pick up my extra stuff. They never told me exactly small this was. The computer is mine, but I can set up accounts for you guys, since it takes up so much room.” She muttered, as equally quiet as Caelum. She glanced at her from the corner of her eye, dipping her head down so her limp bangs hung in her face. ”I’m…Shiori. Sha-Human.” Shit, that would have been nasty. This year was gonna be rough if she was already cutting it close to spilling the beans.

Caelum had never had a roommate before, usually her room was left pretty empty, uneventful . . . quiet. Occasionally a roommate would join for a semester, before switching into a better room, not liking to be in a room with a faerie that didn't like to go out and party all the time. A depressed fairie - she had heard that a lot. Though it was false. She wasn't depressed. She was just . . . in mourning . . . still . . . two years later . . . She walked into her room though, and so it was surprising to see someone already there. It was more surprising, however, when she saw the girl on the bed, arms wrapped onto a pillow, holding it tightly. She hesitated as she approached, about to whisk away when the girl froze, but felt the need to help, the need to do something and so she lightly touched just above the girl's knee, ignoring her when the girl shot straight up, eyes wide, hair disheveled, demanding to know what she was doing - though the question stopped mid way as Caelum coaxed the pain away, working quietly, before floating back with a soft flutter. She was relieved the girl didn't look up at her as she spoked quietly, "I do not like to see others hurt, especially when I know I can be of assistance . . . " She explained, before turning away, her back to her new roommate.
She could feel the girl's eyes on her, or rather, on the wings sprouting from the young princess's back. Caelum didn't turn around as she worked on setting up her part of the room, not hanging anything on the walls, only her clothes, bedding, and some pictures she'd figure out how to align on the top of her desk soon. She glanced up again when the girl muttered a yeah, obviously . . . in response to her questioning about her being the new roommate. The fae looked away, slightly hurt, but making sure her expression was schooled so it wouldn't be shown. A princess never shows weakness when in front of others. Do you have to be a princess all the time. The soft whisper of a voice echoed in her head, a question he . . . her late fiance . . . would often ask. Did she have to be a princess all the time, Can't you just be you . . . especially with me. She shook her head, ridding herself of his voice, feeling it stab through her heart before looking back at Shiori, "Well . . . it's nice to meet you then, I guess. |
[/color]" She said, softly, opening her carry on and starting to pull out a few images. She was startled when light suddenly pooled into the room, her gaze immediately shifting to the young girl who winced when the sun assaulted her, and instantly the fae was standing taking the sheet with a gentle hand, and floating up into the air, putting tacks up to tack it up half way across the wind, the rest of the sheet tacked against the ceiling so that it would direct the sunlight more to her side of the room, " Is this better for you? So you won't deal with as much direct sunlight?" She asked, slowly lowering herself back to the ground, turning to peer at the other girl. She listened as the girl explain she'd have someone come by later to get her other stuff, and Cael waved a hand, " You can always put it under your bed, or . . . you're the only roommate I have, so we can stuff it under the other two beds as well . . ." She offered, turning to start setting up her images, laughing faintly, " I have a personal laptop, there's no need to set up an account, and as I said you're the only roommate." She sat an image of her parents down, another of one of her friends and the castle, and she paused on the image of her and her late-fiance, wrapped in each other's arms, not even noticing the photographer. Then she heard the name of her companion. Shio- The picture slipped from her fingers onto the bed at the second word. Human. Her body went rigid, as she turned slowly to stare at the girl, the smile gone from her face, guards up in her eyes, " Human . . ." Her wings were flat against her back, her mind taking her to a meadow, her fiance on the ground, throat slit, wings sheared off, and the humans who had done it approaching her to take her own. She could still feel the sting of when one of her wings had ripped slightly as she was forced to take off, to save herself - and leave behind . . . his body. " Y-you're . . . a . . . human." Was she going to kill her too now . . . Shear of her wings for the price they'd bring . . . A human . . . after what they'd done to her fiance . . . they had let her board . . . with a human . . . " the fairy, Caelum right?, said in response to healing her knee. Shiori scoffed inwardly as she flipped through the contents of one box. More rolled up canvases, but these would stay hidden in the box. She already had the one canvas she needed out ready to be hung. Caelum said something, but Shiori’s usual sharp hearing, thanks to her shifter blood, was fading each week the longer she remained detached from her animal counterpart. She didn’t hear what the girl had said. Shiori gently kicked the box into her storage pile as Caelum tacked up the sheet, effectively creating a screen from the bright sun for her little area. Shiori blinked in surprise as she stood up, another box in hand. A faint lifting of one of the corners of her mouth was her thanks as she looked at Caelum. She turned back to her items as Caelum once more muttered. But once more, Shiori didn’t hear it, so she returned to her own pressing matters. As Caelum did her own thing (freaking out) Shiori remained blissfully unaware. She took the girl’s silence as shock and glared at her hands as she moved about, back turned purposefully to the fairy. Of course, even fairies here thought her a disgusting creature. If only they knew the half of it. Once she was done separating her boxes, Shiori turned to tack up her only canvas above her bed. She unrolled the frayed canvas with the most delicate touch possible, like it was her most prized possession. In a way, it was though. She tacked each corner carefully, letting the picture come into full view. Water colors faded together, leaving behind a blurry image, but it was still easy to see the picture. A young boy, midteens, sat on a bench beside a Japanese koi pond. Behind him the branches of a cherry tree were in full bloom, blossoms fluttering down around him. His hair was black, cut short, but his bangs long, hung in his face, hiding his eyes. On the lifted finger hover near his face sat a vibrantly colored bird. Her body was a neon green, shifting between emerald hues along her tail feathers and breast to a bright lime upon her back. Bright azure brushed a streak along her side, her wings folded against her small, but beautifully shaped body and patched her throat. The bird was in the process of rubbing her tiny head along the boy’s cheek. Shiori brushed her fingers along the edges of the canvas and stared longingly at it. It had once been a picture, one that had burned in the car crash, but she still could remember her mother snapping the portrait, smiling faintly at the peaceful scene of Heero finally seeing her animal form for the first time. Shiori traced the outline of the bird with a trembling finger tip, almost afraid to touch it, like it would burn if she pressed too hard. Shiori turned, tucking a strand of auburn hair behind her ear and tugging the edges of her cardigan closer to her body. This time she did hear Caelum speak. She turned to Caelum, trying to make herself smaller upon realizing the girl’s distress.

It didn't take too long for Caelum to realize that this girl, this roommate of hers, didn't really care much about what she said, when her only response was to continue going through boxes. Caelum sighed before turning away again, brushing her hair out of her face and tucking it behind her ear. SHe took to the other girl's actions, turning away and continuing to flutter about, as she tacked up the sheet, silently working, and was faintly surprised when the girl managed to give a faint, half smile (if you could call the bare lift of hr lips on one side). Either way Cael nodded lightly in acceptance to the thanks, once more returning to her side and continuing to work, taking out the images, unwrapping the newspaper around them that had kept hem protected. She hummed softly as she worked, the sun touching her pale, near-white hair, her wings limp, except for a faint twitch every now and then.
The silence didn't seem to bother her, much to her relief, as she worked quietly, before she was shocked into silence, an image slipping from her fingers, horror filling her tiny body, a startled, shaky breath slipping from her lips. Human. Her roommate was . . . was human. Her hand reached up, lightly touching the engagement around her neck, the one she wore all the time, with trembling finger tips. She slowly sank down onto the bed, barely noticing the image, the one image, her roommate was hanging up, done in water color of a teenaged boy looking at a lovely song bird.
She distantly saw the girl brush a finger along the edges of the canvas, her vision taking a tunnel like view, fading to dark along the edges, her breath faintly quick, and scared. Her eyes slid shut, the image of her fiance standing in a clear meadow, laughing as sunlight touched his near black hair, green eyes crinkling, holding out a hand to her, Come on, Caely-bird! Put down that paint brush! We've got the entire afternoon to ourselves, let's go do something fun! His laughing voice swept over her, tears threatening to swell up in response to the memory. Aww, Caely, you're no fun! Come on! Bet I can beat you to that tree She remembered that afternoon, they'd been tired of the hustle and bustle of the castle and preparing for their wedding so they'd snuck out. She'd responded by instantly flying towards the tree, and his laughing voice had resounded around her hey! I meant running! That's cheating, Caelum! You know you fly faster than I do! Get back here!
She could almost feel his body against her back, wrapping his arms around her, holding her arms and wings close to her body. His breath touching her cheek, Gotcha, Caely-bird, now try to fly away. He teased. Instantly his body disappeared, the phantom feelings slipping away and leaving her abandoned and alone again. Caelum, Caelum go! Run. Back to the castle. Now! He was back again, in front of her, eyes panicked. There almost here, we've got to go! Ghostly fingers wrapped around her wrist, tugging her away, Come on, Cael- His voice disappeared, replaced with the image of him on the ground, blood spouting from his throat, his hand, coated and slicked with his own blood reaching out to her, blood bubbling from his mouth, G-go C-Cael-lum. G-go. And she had gone, she'd ran away . . . left his dead, wingless body. She'd come back hours later, pouring every once of her healing power into him, trying desperately to bring him back to life to the point that it had nearly killed her. She had to be pulled away and on bed rest for weeks after that to replenish the energy she'd exalted from her body in an effort to make him stay.
THe humans had got to them, had taken him from her, had killed him and gone after her . . . And now they'd put her in a room with a human. Her shoulders shook slightly, shivering, tears in her eyes, biting her lip. "I . . . I was promised . .. no human . . . no human roommates . . . They promised." How could the school do this to her?

She remembered many a time looking like that. Just three hours ago she had looked like that. Broken, trapped in a time that had passed. Her heart clenched as Caelum spoke. Well, fuck. Wasn’t this just dandy. What to do now? Obviously the administration hadn’t thought this through. If they had, Shiori wouldn’t be here in the first place, would she? No, she’d be stuck back in some psych ward, locked in a padded room and strapped into a strait jacket. She winced, running her hands along her shoulders, the phantom pain reminding her of the time she’d ripped her arms out of socket trying to escape the jacket. Her throat burned, like the time she had screamed until her throat cracked and bled. Was Caelum going through something like what she went through every night, trapped in her dreams because of the drugs forcing her to remain sleep?
Shiori had long lost the ability to shift. The exact reasons no one had a clue. But it hadn’t started right after the accident. No. Shiori had been able to do very slight partial shifts for a time. Grow her tail feathers, maybe sprout a few iridescent blue feathers along her forearms, grow talons, even a beak if she wanted to look like the freak she really was. But she couldn’t change her legs nor could she manifest enough feathers to turn her arms into wings. As her mind descended into chaos, so did her powers. She grew to resent her other form and began to avoid anything to do with that life. But obviously the school staff was playing puppeteer again, pulling strings so she’d have no choice to tell someone. She’s gone through therapy once, when they were trying to get her to open up. She hadn’t even bothered closing herself off more. She’d just been plain, simple unresponsive. ’What are ya’ gonna’ do, Sparky, eh?’ he whispered. She could feel him lurking just behind her. Shiori sighed and shed her teal cardigan, allowing her bony shoulders to show as well as the lattice work of scars peeking out beneath over the top of her right shoulder, disappearing beneath her tank top to run the length of her back.
’Here, Sparks. Let me help ya’.’ His hands ghosted up her spine, allowing the fire to lick along the burn scars. His hands ghosted to her eyes. Shiori took a sharp breath as white hot agony sparked across the orbs. Her eyes popped open and the world was displayed to her in vibrant colors, everything a neon version of what it should be. She had pushed a little too far. He fluttered his hands across her eye lashes, taking with him some of the change and her vision slipped back into a more normal mode, colors only slightly enhanced now. She walked, yes walked, across the room, sliding along her tip toes as if she had her wings to lift her up just the slightest bit. ”I’m harmless. You can slap me to kingdom come, or whatever deity you faes worship. Can’t even run. So please, Caelum. Just look.” She was still as she knelt in front of Caelum, staring up with eyes that were indeed no longer human. Her eyes were no longer a normal human, with white sclera and pale irises. The eyes were swirling different colors, the white sclera flaking away as the black from her pupil spread. The iris shifted to the softest blue, they appeared almost white and the pupil became more oval. Bird eyes.

She wrapped an arm around her middle, her fingers tight around the forearm of her opposite arm as she stared down at the ground, nervous, alarmed, not sure to handle the fact that she was expected to survive in a dorm with humans. She didn't look up, never did anything as she closed her eyes briefly, wings limp, not sure what to say, what to do. Then she heard light steps, just the faintest of steps, light like on the tips of her toes, before she heard the girl speak, I'm harmless. Instantly, she flinched back, "No human is harmless! They'll hurt you when you let them to close! They'll kill me just like they ki-" Her voice broke, her hand reaching up to necklace, before jumping again when suddenly Shiori knelt in front of her, asking for her to look. Nervously the fae obeyed and instantly stared in shock at the bird eyes in the face of the human. Caelum froze, confused, wondering if this was a trick, if this was some knew trick. Her fingers tightened around the ring, shaking slightly still, "Y-you . . . but, you had .. . . your eyes . . . they . . . . but." She stumbled over her words, before feeling the ghost of a hand on her shoulder, You think to much, princess, when are you just going to stop letting your teachings rule how you react. Trust me, there's nothing wrong with just seeing, pretty Caely-bird. The words were from a whole different conversation so she wasn't sure why they came wringing back to life now. But she looked at Shiori quietly, regardless, "You . . . you're not really . . . human." She breathed, her shoulders slumping, the ghost weight of the hand leaving her shoulder. Disappearing just as quickly as it had come. She took a breath before collapsing back on the bed, holding a hand to her heart, "Thank god . . . Thank god . . ." She mumbled meekily, before pausing and sitting up again, "But . . . Why, did you say so? Why did you say you were a human. I don't . . . understand."

She stretched out her bad leg before her and stared at the brace surrounded the ruined appendage. It stung that Caelum thought she could hurt her. But really...she probably could. Not intentionally. Shiori frowned deeply, rubbing her eyes as the burning itch crawled across the orbs. Tears leaked out of the irritated red eyes, but as her hands dropped away, the eyes were normal. White sclera, blue iris, round pupil.
”No, I’m not human,” she confirmed Caelum’s words. She climbed to her feet awkwardly, picking up her discarded cardigan and turned back to her items, beginning to unpack her clothes and hang them up. She stopped though, when Caelum spoke of why. ”That little magic trick is all you’re ever going to see. And that will probably be gone by the end of the week. That’s why I’m enrolled as a human.” Shiori muttered quietly.
