[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,500,true] | [atrb=background,http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a13/lilbarrelracer429/middle2.png] The day had been dreary since early that morning. A thick misty rain hung over the city of New Orleans, the humidity levels painfully high even for southern Louisiana. Humans and supernaturals alike remained in doors in the cool air conditioning, wasting away the day on the internet, reading books, sleeping, and who knows what else. Even the stray dogs normally ruling the streets in the absence of humanoid species had taken shelter in their tiny alcoves.. Anyone and anything in their right mind had chosen wisely in finding shelter to wait out the horribly, sticky weather.
Only, there was one exception to the unspoken rule that today was a day for hiding.
Kaotanya smiled as she twirled slowly in the misty drizzle, revealing the feel of the cool rain against her flushed, sticky skin. The music whispered around her, almost seeming to giggle with her. A low growl rumbled in her mind and she sighed, giving one last twirl. Then she stepped forward to the small pond, lifting one foot at a time to take off her shoes. She sat down, elegantly folding her legs beneath like she’d been taught to as a young child among the high courts. Her hands rested on her knees as she leaned forward to peer at her reflection in the pond.
A useless effort, for she could not really see it.
An on looker though, could see the hazy outline in the pond’s glistening ripples of a dragon laying behind the girl, her serpentine neck curled around the girl protectively as she gazed at her. The young woman pushed her hair back from her face and adjusted her legs into a position to properly meditate. Her palms turned upward and she took a deep cleansing breath at the dragon’s mental instructions. ”Human form, or median? “ Her soft voice asked the dragon who’s face turned to critically analyze the girl. ’Median. Strong connection that way. You are in my element today, not your own. We do not want to drain you too much.’ The dragon’s great, royal voice rung through the clearing, barely audible.
The young woman nodded and took another breath, closing her gray eyes. Her long, wavy hair and exotic caramel skin remained the same, but slowly her features changed. Her ears lengthened a bit, growing into a sharp point like elven ears. Canines became more pronounced and long, nimble fingers were topped off with nails a little too sharp to be called simple nails. Her white wings slowly began to streak through with silver and hints of purple, so faint they were practically invisible. Silver fairy dust clung to her cheeks and temple, sparkling like morning sunlight on fresh dew. A streak of white slowly spread from her roots to tip on a stray lock of her bangs. Finally, with her family necklace giving off a faint twinkle, the transformation was complete.
The dragon purred in satisfaction, pleased her transformation time was lessening and the growing influence of magic was becoming more apparent. Last time the white lock of hair had only been streaked to mid length. ’Good. Today, you will work on manipulation. I will watch and regulate the currents around us so nothing explodes like last time.’ The young Wind Dragon smiled softly as she continued to find her center, which was becoming increasingly easy to do with each passing day. ”That was your fault last time, Liam barged in and you jumped. You two never stop fighting. It’s quite exhausting,“ the girl mumbled. ’Focus.’ was the dragon’s automatic reply.
Kao took another breath and dived into the hidden world of magic.
The whispering song burst forth in grand fashion. Each tiny splash was a soft, lingering piano note. Each ripple was a delicate, wavering string. The song was weak, fading. The wind stilled around them until only the rain, mist, and music remained. The slow drizzle picked itself apart until she could make out the life force driving each rain drop to the ground. The magic flickered, wavering and growing like that of a candle flame. But it was stronger today. All around her, the world was slowly being replenished. And with the new life being fed into the world around her, the song changed, growing with the very life it nourished. The magic seeped into the ground, and she felt the tiny flickers of growing life as the grass responded and reached upwards. Her breathing slowed in time with the beat of the song until the song was inside her.
The dragon watched in silent and secret awe as the drizzle itself slowed. The girl had improved so much; she was slowly weaving her own magic into the delicate threads around her, supplementing the song, making it grow stronger around them. Katswiri checked the stability of the magic around them, fearful that with how quickly the bond formed that the balance would be tilted. But the stability was growing stronger. The girl lifted her face to the sky, a soft purr rising from her throat until it grew stronger, into a gentle hum.
The ancient words slowly became clear, whispering in her ear from deep within her soul, until she was softly singing the words that nature its very self-spoke.

Kriton was fucking miserable. Not just miserable, but just down right pissed off. He had managed to lose track of Maeve in this God awful fucking weather, and now he was in this stupid park walking around, getting soaked because it just had to fucking rain. Now he wished he had just taken his chance to kill her when he ran into her at the office. This had gone on for entirely too long, and he was completely sick of it. He just wanted his life back to what he considered normal, damn it. With a loud sigh he shoved his hands in his coat pockets and started to head back to his car. He might as well give up the hunt for a day and track her down back at her house, whenever she decided to return home. She was a bit suspicious of him now, and it made for hard work.
As he was moving back through the gardens he noticed a change in the air. ”What the fuck…” It was as if the entire atmosphere had shifted in some way, and he didn’t like it at all. Then he heard it. It was faint, but there was definitely a musical note in the air. It sounded… magical. Blah, he hated that word. It was too… good. If this was giving off bad vibes, he would probably love it. But he was getting nothing but good vibes from everything going on around him. With a slight twitch of his eye, he changed direction and followed the sound of the music. He heard the faint sounds of a female voice talking, then it was silent for a few minutes. Kriton stepped out on a path, ready to pounce on whatever was causing this irritation, and then stopped short at the sight before him.
A small girl sat by the pond. As she moved her face, something on her cheeks and temples caught the light and sent brilliant sparkles dancing on the ground and through the air. Her ears were also delicately pointed. The wind and rain seemed to be dancing around the girl. The music was a bit louder now that he was closer. He couldn’t make out what the words were, but it sounded like an ancient tune. Something sung by people long, long ago. He forgot everything he was doing, and simply stared with wide eyes at the beautiful, yes, beautiful scene before him. ”Well, holy shit…”

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,500,true] | [atrb=background,http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a13/lilbarrelracer429/middle2.png] There was a subtle change to the song, signifying the presence of another being not so attuned to magic. Katswiri shifted to gaze upon the man whom had stumbled upon their training session, trying to coax the sudden flux of unstable energies surrounding them into a softer lull. The music slowed, becoming quieter, as if hiding from the world. Kaotanya moved to grasp at the magic’s call, sinking her mind further into the energies around her and trying to pull the threads back to the surface. Katswiri’s sharp voice filled her head, ”Don’t! If you pull at it, it will strike back. Coax it out again, you found the song, make it more pronounced with your own magic, borrow mine if you must,”
The small girl took a shuddering breath and released it, trying to ignore the presence watching. It had been easy once before hand, why was it so hard now? Katswiri turned her attention to the new comer, her image in the water fading from sight so as to not give her away. She eyed him warily, concerned that the magic would fade so quickly in his presence. The young Wind Dragoness took another, more calming breath and tuned out the world. She imagined the song gently coming back, to finish off and like a slowly blooming flower, the music swelled once more. The wind danced around her, playing with her long hair. The necklace around her neck gave off a faint eerie glow that turned her tanned skin a soft bloody color.
The music began to fade as her strength waned out, a soft static filling her mind as the image of her world, black with white dots clinging to life, grew fuzzy. Katswiri coaxed her weary mind from its depths, slightly afraid she had pushed the girl too far. The girl took a few moments to take deep breaths and regain her bearings. The sound of the gentle rain fall came back and then finally the presence, and scent, of her watcher. A male. Her shoulders grew slightly tense as the glitter clinging to her cheeks lost some of its vibrancy with the loss of the magic. She opened her murky eyes and slowly rose to her feet, keeping her center. Being blind didn’t help with balance very well, but she was better with Katswiri’s training.
She turned to face the man, her silver eyes ghosting over the silver particles that clung to outline of his figure in the dark. ”Um… “ she started, then quickly realized how silly that sounded, for a girl of her status. ”Hello? “ she corrected her speech, her voice soft, but just a bit confused. His form was fuzzy in her vision with her recent exhertion. ”You should rest, Kaotanya. Let your vision go of your own accord before it fades on its own.” But Kao didn’t want to be alone in the complete dark just yet.

He really wasn’t quite sure what was going on. His head was swimming with the music, the magic invading his head. All he saw was a small girl by a lake, but he felt as if a much bigger presence was with them. He shook his head as it slowly began to fade, trying to get it out of his mind. He felt very peaceful being there with the music. And he didn’t like the feeling. Kriton didn’t do peaceful. Quite the opposite, actually.
The girl slowly began to face him, and he blinked a few times at the sparkles adorning her cheeks, at the face the presented itself to him. He blinked as his mind froze then growled and shook his head. Damn all this magic and trickery, what was he even doing here anyway? He should be out tracking down that damned teacher. Um… Hello? He turned his attention back to the girl, blinking at the softness in her voice. He noticed the girls eyes were a bit hazy and unfocused. Odd. ”Hello…” he answered back awkwardly. He wasn’t good at interacting civilly with others… Normally he was either trying to kill them or barking orders at them.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,500,true] | [atrb=background,http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a13/lilbarrelracer429/middle2.png] The young woman stood there for a moment, her muscles frozen. Ever since Lothario, she’d never been alone with a male (other than her roommates) and it made her nervous. He’d be gentlemanly in the beginning but grew angry and loud towards the end of their ‘relationship’ (if you could call it that) when he began to suspect her of hiding secrets. She’d never really hidden them, though; it was not her fault he didn’t read between the lines enough. She’d left clues for him to figure out his own so as not to anger the dragon within.
He’d never hit her, otherwise there would be a dead dragon for her to explain. But that didn’t mean in the heat of the moment, he hadn’t raised a hand against her. Their blissful meetings in the beginning quickly descended to chaos. The last she saw him was a few months ago. Part of her was glad to see him go, but the more prominent one was that she could not tell him the truth and help him through the troubles that had plagued him.
She felt almost, that she had failed someone.
Standing before this man, she was ready to give an excuse so she could bolt and find her comfort zone. Something about this man standing before her, with his form fading in and out of her ‘sight,’ made her stay though. He answered her own greeting in an awkward way. She could sense his hesitation, like he was afraid to do something. Or rather, afraid to do the wrong thing. He was out of his element, just like she was. But she was friendly, maybe a bit of a hermit lately because she’d found her niche of friends to hang out with.
She shifted her weight and steadied her stance, clasping her hands in front of her, not behind like she used to. She squared her shoulders and lifted her chin. Like a proper lady, she told herself. She’d be coroneted soon, so she needed to practice little habits that would make her stand out. She’d be the youngest Queen and a lot would be expected of her. A soft smile tugged at Kao’s mouth, revealing her sharp canines and white teeth. Her eyes crinkled slightly in the corners at the slightest lifting of her mouth. ”I am sorry if I disturbed your walk or anything of that nature. It is hard to find a moment on campus where I can be alone and practice,“ she answered softly, trying to start a conversation. She spoke very properly for someone as young as she appeared. ”My name is Kaotanya. If it suits you, you can call me Kao, though.“

The girl seemed so young, yet she appeared so beautiful to him. He caught a glance of her eyes and noticed they were a bit off. A bit unfocused. He wondered if she were blind or had major vision problems. She seemed a bit off in general, a bit awkward in the presence of him. Was it because of the air that surrounded him? He created many ill feelings in others simply by his presence. Or perhaps it was another reason entirely. His brain made these observations on que, without him having to force them. It was a well-oiled machine. Well, usually. At this moment it was failing to give him a single sentence to say to the young lady.
He watched her construct herself, fixing herself in a pose that reminded him of the way royalty would stand. It set off a bit of a red flag in his mind and he took a partial step back. He didn’t like royalty. They were always the hardest to dispose of. I am sorry if I disturbed your walk or anything of that nature. It is hard to find a moment on campus where I can be alone and practice. Her musical voice attracted his attention again and he cursed himself as he felt her pulling him back in to her. ”Oh, uh.. you didn’t disturb me. I wasn’t really taking a peaceful stroll or anything…” He ran a hand through his brown locks again, glancing at the ground. My name is Kaotanya. If it suits you, you can call me Kao, though. Kriton looked up again. Kaotanya. It was such a beautiful name. ”Hello Kao… I’m Kriton. Just Kriton.” He never told people his last name. It was well known among all the wrong people. He felt the need to not scare this girl off, and it irritated him, but he might as well roll with it. ”So… that was magic? And you were controlling it?”

The Ancient Dragon could see Kriton perfectly, her vision unobscured even by the rain. Water was technically her element after all. She didn’t like the looks of him, his eyes were too sharp, too calculating. His partial step backwards after Kaotanya composed herself sent off red flags. He was quickly picking up on hints that others previously had not. Well, most of their encounters had been with dragons who knew something of the Royal Courts so they knew from the start for the most part whom they were talking to. Well at least when Kats was in charge; she tended to throw her title around. But for a Water Nymph to catch on this quickly?
”Watch yourself, Kao. He is a sharp one. Don’t trust him lightly.”
Kao mentally rolled her eyes at the dragon. ’You never trust anyone regardless,’ she snapped at the dragon, irritated. Ugh, this oncoming headache was not making the two dragoness’s mental conversations any easier. ”He is not of our kind, he has no right to meddle in it and you have no right to meddle in his. Your duty is to your people,” the ancient dragon snarled. Kaotanya winced and resisted the urge to press her fingertips to her temple. ’As I am not coroneted yet, ‘my people’ are the least of my concerns right about now. They barely know I exist.’
Kaotanya turned her attention back to Kriton, not that it had appeared to waver away from him to visible eyes in the first place. She was getting pretty good at multitasking. She tilted her head in confusion as to why he would be out here in the first place, if not for a walk of the peaceful nature. The gardens were created for that purpose essentially. She brushed off his subtle refusal to offer his last name as a desire to keep his privacy, though Katswiri mumbled within that it was a bad sign. He was hiding something. ’As am I, mind you,’ she reminded herself sullenly.
She blinked at his assumption, surprised that he would know of it. Well, he did appear older than her, but Water Nymphs, quite frankly, weren’t all that adept in the ways of magic. She’d met a few and they’d been content to just simply muddle around with their water tricks. This one was oddly shy for a Water Nymph, most she had met at school were playful beings. But controlling magic? She reminded herself the new, current views of magic thought it something that could be made, not something that existed naturally. ”Magic isn’t about controlling it, it’s more about bending it to your will,“ she looked up at the sky, smiling softly, forlornly almost.

Kriton stood watching the young girl, tilting his head slightly. She was taking a longer pause than normal to answer him. It was odd, but her eyes seemed a tad unfocused whereas before they had been bright and clear. He dared not probe with his mind, as he knew these magical creatures had many boundaries and he was sure to send up red flags if the girl felt him sneaking around in her subconscious.
When she tilted her head in return to his answer about walking he gave her a wry grin and shrugged. “Let’s call it a business walk. I’ve seemed to have lost someone and can’t find them.” This bit of info tugged at his mind. He’d been trying to locate Maeve for the past three days. She was no where when she should have been. Even her dog and the boy she looked after were gone. It was like she had vanished off the face of the Earth. And frankly, Kriton realized he was sick of tracking her down. If she was going to do anything about the information she had, she would have done it by now. Perhaps it was time for Kriton to take up a new business, something different than his normal killing people. He shrugged a bit at himself and turned back to his conversation. Perhaps now would be a good time to work on his people skills.
Magic isn’t about controlling it, it’s more about bending it to your will. Kriton nodded at the girl. ”My mistake. I don’t really have anything to do with magic, just some water tricks here and there,” he grinned, glancing at the rain and bending it to swirl lightly around the girl. He may have only been a water nymph, but his whole family had been a line of very powerful water nymphs. Most of his kind didn’t have nearly the control of water as he did. He rather enjoyed his power over water, it was really convenient some days. ”It’s getting kinda chilly out here, why don’t we go step inside the café down the street?” It was a stretch, but he thought he’d test his abilities to be a gentleman.

She was getting stronger in separating the two minds that had melded so closely. At least, when Kats wasn’t fighting back too hard. She knew the dragon within was just playing her, letting her think she was growing stronger. It made living together easier; allowing each other to think they had some miniscule control over the other and thus the ability to call upon some amount of privacy when needed. ”That is a shame, that you have lost someone. I wish you luck in finding whomever it is, it is never fun to have someone out of reach when you need them.”
’Don’t you DARE think of summoning that tin can. You have me, that righteous bastard has no claim over you.’ Katswiri’s voice snarled within her head, breaking past the barrier. Good grief, Kaotanya wasn’t even thinking of Liam, nor referring to him in any roundabout way. ’You are particularly prickly today,’ Kaotanya thought off hand as she spoke of controlling magic to Kriton. This multi tasking was rough. ’PRICKLY! I am NOT a porcupine, mortal!’ Kaotanya winced, wondering just how rough Kats was going to treat her body tonight on her nightly flight when she turned over control. ’Forget prickly, you’re a downright haughty bitch today,’ the young woman grumbled, turning her full attention back to Kriton just to avoid the mental triad of how Kao should not talk like that, much less to her of all dragons.
She was glad to turn her attention back to Kriton, just in time to catch his words and see a shimmer of magic in her fading sight as he formed the mist and drizzle around her. She reached out a delicate hand to touch the glimmering silver ribbon that was his magic, surprised he could so easily and adeptly maneuver it, but pulled back last minute. Ever since her bonding with Kats, magic had become an intimate part of her. She felt it to her very core and sometimes, when Liam accidentally touch anything that was HER particular magic, it sent a rush down her spine that had her head spinning. In ancient times, the sharing of magic and touching of one’s specific magic signature was on an intimate level. If she didn’t like even her Guardian, the one who’d essentially raised her, touching her magic, she’d guess that others wouldn’t like it either. Then again, she was bonded to Katswiri, an Ancient Dragon of the Magic category, so she was much more attuned to magic. Maybe it was only to Kao herself she felt such an…ethereal connection.
Her feathered wings rustled at his mentioning of the chill in the air, curling around her shoulders, and she was suddenly aware of her quite wet state and clothes not quite fit for this weather. She was dragon, and even though she was of the Wind species, she had an inner fire that helped fight against minor chills. This was a wet chill, though; she was more accustomed to the dry, icy chill found high above the clouds. And with Kats retreating back into the dark recesses of their mind, Kats own natural defenses against icy water was retreating with the ancient dragon. She brought her hands up to her face, calling upon the inner fire that was a tight coil within her belly. She blew in her hands and the warmth spread over her frame, allowing her to fight off the chill for a little longer. She didn’t have enough energy left to summon wind magic to quickly dry her form.
She reached up to her limp hair and pulled the wet, dark locks together, twisting them into a messy bun and tying it there with a rubber band from her wrist. Her now bare shoulders revealed the previously hidden tattoo that graced her left shoulder blade. The ink was heavily faded and the edges of the mark murky, almost like bleeding ink. It looked more like a birthmark; it was very faint, almost nonexistent. Getting the heavy wet locks off her neck fought of the chill a bit better and as she raised her arms, the delicate silver chain pulled her family heirloom up from underneath her shirt. The copper gem glimmered with an inner fire. She smiled at Kriton and nodded. ”That sounds wonderful right about now,” she admitted, very much looking forward to a warm cup of coffee.

That is a shame, that you have lost someone. I wish you luck in finding whomever it is, it is never fun to have someone out of reach when you need them. Kriton snorted and chuckled silently, shaking his head. ”Well, perhaps they do not consider it such a shame.” His eyes sparkled with the dark pleasure of the hunt before they fell upon the young girl again and cleared. No, he did not want to act like this around her. He didn’t know why, but he felt the need to hide his darkness from this female. As he bended the water to his will, he watched in fascination as the girl reached out a hand, as if to touch the swirling rain, but she dropped it just as quick. He blinked at her a few times in question before voicing his idea of heading to the café.
As if his words suddenly made her aware of her surroundings, her wings moved closer to her body as if to protect her from the rain. He watched in interest as she raised her hands to her face and blew in them. He faintly felt the brush of a warm wind in the chilly rain. Yeah, she was definitely a dragon. His eyes glanced over the mark on her shoulder when she put her hair up. He could barely see it was there, but there was a definite slight difference in skin color. He also took note of the necklace she wore. It looked important, but he hadn’t a clue as to what it actually meant. That sounds wonderful right about now. He smiled tentatively at her and turned to walk towards the café. It was a nice little place. It was where he had been sitting when he had first watched Maeve walk down the street those few weeks ago. But as he glanced at the beautiful creature walking next to him, he forgot all about Maeve and the fact that she had managed to disappear. Again. They picked a booth and he slid into it easily, smiling at the waitress and order a black coffee. He gazed at Kao while she gave her order, taking in extra details of her. He didn’t know what he was getting himself into, but he had a feeling he was in for quite the ride.

"speech"/'thoughts'
His comment made her wonder, though being Kao, she never really jumped to the conclusion that Kriton might be bad for her. Even now, after Lothario had left his mark, she still considered the fire dragon to not have been 'bad' for her. She always managed to see past the dark, or rather never saw it in the first place. Ironic for a blind girl, huh? She watched his retreating figure and followed, making sure to stand just behind him so his faint form would flicker in and out of view of her magic sight. It became a bit harder once to focus on his form once they reached the café, since there were other people around. Her already strained sight was struggling even more. She reached up and rubbed one eye with the heel of her palm. She followed closely at his heels, waiting to take her own seat until he had sat. She shuffled forward until the tip of her foot hit the booth’s edge and reached forward, her fingers touching smooth, cool wood. The table was about hip height on her, so she used the reference and slid into the booth gracefully, keeping her center squared.
She listened to the approach of the waitress and Kriton order his coffee. She looked down at the table quietly, feeling the sharp stare of the waitress on her supernatural appearance. She played with the hem of her shorts. ”Um, I’ll have a peppermint mocha latte.” she murmured, hyper aware of other stares looking in her direction. Her instincts made the hair on the back of her neck prickle. She shifted in her seat before sighing, reaching for the coil deep inside her chest. She carefully unknotted the magic and let the thrum of the change overcome her. Her ears rounded out, the stardust on her cheeks slowly faded. The canines bothering her lips shortened greatly and even her wings disappeared into thin air. The necklace at her bust line glimmered for a moment. And quite suddenly she was normal looking. Well, for the most part, she still had wide pale eyes and dark skin. She looked like a normal level of exotic now, if that were possible. Her fingers reached up to begin twirling a stray lock of loose dark hair nervously as her now normal teeth continue to worry her bottom lip, waiting for the stares to lessen. Ugh, this is why she never came out in public anymore unless with another dragon.
”So...um, Kriton, what do you do for a living?” she had no idea how taboo the subject was, for both of them, but she was nervous and needed to make small talk. And all she knew about Kriton so far was that he was a water nymph with outstanding powers. And that he sounded considerably older than her physical form, even though she knew for a fact in dragon years she easily out ranked his age. And Kaotanya was a Wind Dragon, a curious creature over all. While she might not be as playful as most of her kind, she was still just as curious. Kaotanya rubbed at her eye again as her sight finally gave way completely. She bit her lip harder, realizing she’d over done herself today. Liam was not going to be happy.

Kriton sat smoothly in the bench and watched as the girl cautiously sat down. Her behavior was peculiar and he wondered if the girl was blind. She seemed to have a hard time seeing, but she was able to make her way around mostly. Odd. He wondered if it would be wrong to ask her or not. He studied her more as she stared down at the table, avoiding the gaze of the waitress. Um, I’ll have a peppermint mocha latte. Quite the contrast to his black coffee. He cringed internally at the amount of sugar she would be consuming. He’d never been one for sweets. When she sighed he glanced up to see her features returning to that of a human’s. With a start he glanced around and noticed all of the stares she was getting. He blinked his eyes a few times. Normally he was on top of his surroundings, but he had been so entranced by this girl that he hadn’t once glanced around himself. He wasn’t sure whether to be angry at himself or, well… He just didn’t know what to feel in general at this point. His mind was completely jumbled.
Their waitress brought their drinks to them. Kriton thanked the waitress and pulled his cup to him, lifting it and taking a sip of the hot coffee. So…um, Kriton, what do you do for a living? Kriton’s eyes widened and he sputtered and coughed on the coffee in his mouth, grabbing a napkin and holding it to his mouth. He recovered quickly, clearing his throat. ”Sorry, coffee was a bit hotter than I expected.” In reality she had asked a question that would have generally been a normal means of small talk. However, his job description wasn’t exactly what you would have called normal and he was sure she would run screaming out the door if he told her he was a professional murderer. So, instead, he cleared his throat again and told a modified truth. ”I’m a business guy… I deal with people when they’re upset about something. Kinda like customer service. It’s hard to explain.” He felt a twinge of guilt but squashed it. He barely knew this girl, why should he care what he told her?

"speech"/'thoughts'
She could still feel the occasional gaze from people around them, though she was fine tuned to such a thing now. With her sight gone, her other senses were over sensitive to compensate for her the darkness that now completely dominated her vision. Her skin prickled, feeling the changing mini air currents as people moved about. Her ears twitched with the explosion of sounds she couldn’t identify. ’Calm down, you’re in a bloody coffee shop, nothing dangerous here. Except for the bastard across from you,’ Katswiri’s voice rumbled in her mind. Kao blinked her hazy eyes and ignored the dragon within.
Kao visibly jumped when the waitress approached and placed their cups down on the table. She turned her wide eyes to glance in her general direction before turning them back to the table. She took a moment to sense the air currents, using the temperature change in the area near the cup to locate it. She lifted her fingers in its direction and bumped the cup with her fingertips sooner than she expected. She drew her fingers back for a second then reached forward more assertively to grab the cup. She ran her finger tips over the rim, gauging the heat, before it bringing it to her lips to take a sip. The cool scent of peppermint tickled her nose and calmed her nerve. ’Next training exercise, fighting completely blind, you’re so damn jumpy,’ Katswiri grumbled. Again Kao ignored her, she was quite good at it.
She asked her question and was quite surprised when Kriton acted the way he did. She jumped, nearly dropping her cup of coffee. She blinked, her clouded eyes now looking up from the table towards the direction his voice sounded. She tilted her head upon hearing him clear his throat, like a cute puppy hearing a high pitch noise. His coffee was hot? But her was fine, a little too warm, but not enough to make her choke. Was it just her, or did his voice waver? ’Yes,’ Katswiri spoke to silence and snarled, ’no matter what I’m going to say, you’re just gonna keep ignoring me, aren’t you?’ Again, the Great Queen received no answer.
When he offered an explanation of his job, Kao gave a soft smile. Her white teeth were bright against her dark, tanned skin. "Well, then, I guess I should ask for some pointers from you," she took a sip from her cup, letting it hover just far enough from her lips so she could still feel the vapors of the steam on her skin. "My mentor is training me to take over the family business. So I can only imagine what it’s like to deal with angry, unhappy customers."
