She was only a classroom assistant at the moment, still a while of college left to be able to call herself an actual teacher and even then she would need a bit more school for finalization purposes. Though it would all be worth it in the end, she was sure of it, her heart fluttering as she bounced the keys around in her hands, sitting in the leather chair as she flipped through the files of the children, starting to memorize their names before they would arrive in an hour. The time ticked by as she lost herself in lettering and seating arrangements, the coffee on the wooden surface of the desk eventually running empty when the first bell rang and she hopped up with a bright grin, smoothing her cream skirt out and tugging on her rosy blouse. Her fingers wrapped around the handle as she opened up the door, standing there and greeting every single child that passed through, occasionally chatting with every parent that had any questions about the new situation, assuring them that she would make sure their little ones succeeded. With a giggle she waved farewell to the last parent before the bell rang again and she closed the door, turning back to her classroom of fifteen children, warmth just seeping from her as she sighed in delight.
** Fiery hatchlings and attitude-filled demons scurried around, chasing one another over the pale wine carpet blending softly with the golden of the walls, a single wave falling from her messy bun as she sat in the rocking chair reading to the quieter gargoyles and shifters. Though not once did she snap at them, just tossing a soft scolding look and telling the rowdy kids to calm down, and eventually they got tired as well, flopping on to the carpet as the classroom was filled with silence, each turn of the page like an orchestra of suspense for the wide eyes of all the tykes. Her soft lips quirked up in amusement as she saw them all stare at her slack-jawed, wanting to know what happened to Little Red Riding Hood after her first encounter with the Big Bad Wolf, though when she was nearing the last few pages she whispered out in dramatic effect, “Then she opened the door and saw her grandmother, but something wasn't right! Red walked next to Grandma's bed and said, “Oh my, what big ears you have, Grandma.” But the Wolf tricked Red as he told her quietly, “All the better to hear you with, my sweet.” If Red didn't see through the Wolf's disguise soon, then who knows what would happen!” She suddenly shut the book despite all the whined groaning from the kids begging her to finish, though she just winked and said with content, “Sorry my lovelies, but I think it's time for you all to take a nap, so go get your bed rolls~” For once in her life Allison laughed sweetly at their trudging, not her usual giggle that was reminiscent of a teenage girl. No, this was the laugh of a growing woman, and she was proud.

He slipped off his head phones and spun in the chair, gazing around himself at the tiny apartment him and Elaina called home. It wasn’t much, but it was something. It contained a living room, a tiny kitchen and bathroom, and one bedroom, but it was enough for now. He spun back to the computer, closing down his music program. He had finally put a plan into action for his future and had started doing some little gigs at the local music places. They didn’t pay much and he had to have some odd jobs on the side, but the money he had earned had bought them this apartment and kept food in their fridge. He was working on his own demo CD, hoping to mail it off and get publicity somewhere. He knew it was far-fetched but it was something he had always been interested in, specifically rock music.
He walked through his apartment, picking up the random toys that were strewn throughout the rooms and cleaned up the crayons that had been left out on the table. He sighed, making a mental note to start teaching Elaina how to clean up after herself. He moved walked into the bedroom and placed all of the toys back into their bins. Then he glanced at his side table and walked to it, picking up the tiny picture frame that sat on it. He gazed at the face that beamed out at him, the smile perfect, the eyes a calm golden brown. The wound was still fresh, still raw. But he had learned to simply slap a band-aid over it and continue on with his life. He owed it to Elaina if anything. She needed someone there to take care of her, and she kept him going in his days. He just hoped to God he was doing everything right.
Speaking of his daughter, he glanced at his watch and realized it was time to get her from school. He replaced the picture frame, gazing at it for a bit before slipping on his coat and shoes and heading out the door. He shut and locked it behind him and headed out onto the sidewalk, heading for the school. It was about a 20 minute walk from his house, but it was do able and he tried is best not to use the car if he could help it. Gas was expensive.
He made it to the school and checked in at the front desk before going to Elaina’s classroom where all of the other parents were already coming out with their kids. He walked in and spotted her, a smile instantly growing on his face. She turned and looked at him, her eyes so painstakingly close to her mothers, only brighter and more fierce. Daddy! she squealed, running over to him as he bent down to grab her and pick her up in a hug. ”There’s my little monster! How as school?” he asked, smiling at the tiny creature in his arms. Fun! We had a new teacher today! ”Did you now?” he asked, setting her down and glancing around. He hadn’t had time to actually walk into the classroom that morning with her, and now he spotted the little blonde who was speaking to another parent. He gazed at her for a moment. She seemed familiar but he couldn’t quite place her. Then he remembered, a day a long time ago when he had been hiding in the abandoned building at the school to skip class and a little perky blonde and come across him and he had almost-
He stopped there, shaking his head. He was an adult now, and while he couldn’t erase the past, he wasn’t very fond of taking a trip down memory lane. He set Elaina down and took her hand, walking over to the blonde. ”Allison?” he asked with a tentative smile. ”It’s been awhile. It’s me, Brayden.”

Then she waved her hand in farewell as the father jostled away with his spawn in tow, munching on a brownie with those grubby hands, crayon markings all over his palm from their earlier activities. Her hand immediately went to the pins holding that tousled bun in, pulling them out with a sigh as she allowed those golden locks to cascade down past her shoulders, instead grabbing a band as she started to fix her hair in a more comfortable braid, brows furrowed together as she held the pins with her lips. She was so immersed in nimbly getting all the strands in order that she was almost startled when a man came over, catching the falling pins before they hit the ground with a squeak, dropping them on the table almost right after, the elastic pulled once more around the end of her braid so it was complete. Blue eyes were wide with relief as she turned to face the parent of one of her temporary students, at least until the real teacher came back, hands on her hips with a bright smile, chest shallowly raising as she caught her breath, only to feel it nearly rush back out in surprise.
** Brayden? He didn't even have to tell her that name for her to recognize him! She might be rather bubbly and oblivious at times, but she never forgot a single person she met, well, at least the ones she liked being in the company of, and they had fun in that abandoned building! He had been all mysterious, and she still remembered that flash of his power, as well as the stick throwing, oh yes that had been excellent, her inner lupess yipping happily with glee, and she didn't have any qualms from chirping out, “Aww, Bray-Bray, nice to see you again!” Overtly physical as was characteristic of the Californian, Allison was already looping her arms around his neck in a warm hug, pulling back as she glanced down at Elaina, stroking the top of her head gently as she chimed, “No wonder you're such a sweetheart, like father like daughter, huh darling?” The demon was definitely one of the younger parents in here, and it was not that hard to guess who the mother was, remembering that one thing he had told her, the cinnamon eyes of the girl who had stolen his heart. But there was also something different about Bray this time around as well, he seemed thinner, sadder, just not as arrogant or fiery as he had been when they were in high school, yet the shifter bit her tongue to refrain from asking any questions. Nope, this wasn't any of her business, but she would always provide a shoulder for him if he needed it, that always made her feel better too, to help anyone, whether adult or youth. So instead she placed a gentle hand on his arm, tilting her head to the side as she smiled and asked, “How've you been? It definitely has been quite some time~”

He responded to her hug, squeezing her gently and chuckling at the use of her nickname “Bray-Bray” for him. It used to irritate the crap out of him, but now it was just nice to see a familiar face. He watched her pull back and stroke the top of Elaina’s head. No wonder you’re such a sweetheart, like father like daughter, huh darling? Brayden grinned, ”You flatter me Allison.” He knew Elaina had her mother’s personality. He had never been a kind, caring person until he met Cora. He flinched internally, her name sending an arrow of emotional pain through him. He glanced down, Elaina seemed to glow under the extra attention and looked up at him, gazing into his eyes with the cute little smile she had. It melted your heart and won you over in an instant.
How’ve you been? It definitely has been quite some time~ she asked as she laid her hand on his shoulder. He looked at her, seeing some sort of deeper understanding in her. Did she know? He didn’t know if she had ever really known Cora or the relationship they had had. So he just shrugged and cracked a smile. ”Eh, you know, life. I’m trying to get a music career started, as lame as that sounds. I have a gig tomorrow night at the 544 if you would like to come watch.” He knew Allison wouldn’t laugh in his face. She was a good friend. ”But how are you doing? I haven’t seen you since the day of graduation.” He flinched again as he remembered having to leave because Elaina decided to make her entrance into the world that day. He knew he had to get over this constant pain and misery that any memory that involved Cora brought, and he was trying, but it was so damn hard.
